Take Care of your Immune System



Even though winter is nearly over it is still important to take care of our immune system. It really is an all year round affair to help prevent our systems from getting run down and prone to illness. To be aware of the different ways we can improve our immune system...

 

Even though winter is nearly over it is still important to take care of our immune system. It really is an all year round affair to help prevent our systems from getting run down and prone to illness. To be aware of the different ways we can improve our immune system is important and key to great health. A great diet is the foundation and needs to start here. Without it we really are fighting an uphill battle. Here are a few tips: Increasing vitamin C containing fruits and vegetables each day – think citrus fruits, berries, kiwis, green, red and orange vegetables (think of a traffic light!) Drinking plenty of water and herbal tea throughout the day to help flush out the toxins in our system; Avoiding processed sugars and inflammatory foods as they decrease our immune capability; Including zinc – pumpkin seeds, seafood, red meat and wholegrains are all great sources; Including probiotics to support healthy gut bacteria levels (around 70-80% of our immune system lives in our guts!) This can be through supplements or by introducing foods such as sauerkraut, kefir, and other fermented foods; Avoiding stress as much as possible as it weakens our immune system (this year hasn’t really been conducive to this but we can try and focus on the positives at least!); Getting plenty of fresh air, exercise and SUNSHINE (Vitamin D!); Making time for fun! Do something each day that you enjoy and brings you happiness – this promotes good endorphins and drives down our stress hormones and inflammation; Getting good quality sleep can make a massive difference! Don’t underestimate the power of rest and recovery! Adding in some nutritional supplements such as vitamin C, zinc and vitamin D can also help to support our immune systems.
